The tournament is being FIDE (The international chess federation) rapidplay rated. As such ENG participants would have to be ECF members to take part. If you are not already, please contact 01424 775 222 to join, or visit the English Chess Federation website.

DATE: 28/Apr/2012 (Sat.)
VENUE: Union Dining Hall, Imperial College Union (1st Floor), Beit Quadrangle, Prince Consort Road, London SW7 2BB
CLOSEST TUBE: South Kensington / High Street Kensington, Zone 1
EVENT FORMAT: 25 minutes per player for game with an additional 10 seconds per move starting from the first move. Games will be ECF Rapidplay graded and FIDE Rapidplay rated (Woohoo!). 6 round Swiss.
ENTRY LIMITS: There is a strict limit (subject to the Union giving us more tables/chairs!) of 18 teams for this event. As a result we must limit this event to the first 18 teams that submit their entry fee, subject to the organiser’s discretion. Please get your entry in early!
TEAMS AND COST: Each team will consist of four boards. The cost per team is £50 for team entry fees received on or before the 13th of April, 2012 – note this cost is the same even if you have additional reserve players on your team (as long as you declare them as reserve players at registration). However, any entries with the entry fee received on or after the 14th of April, 2012 will be charged a £10 late entry fee (Total entry fee £60).
BOARD ORDER: The average ECF grade (Rapid taking precedence over Standard) of the top four players in the team will be the grade used for pairing purposes. A complete team is required to register, you may not enter as an individual.
ENG PLAYERS: Please note that all players must be current members of their national federation because this event is FIDE rated. This means that ENG players need to be ECF members and quote their membership number at the time of team submission.
PRIZES: Engraved team trophies for the top three teams (clocks) – so of some practical use as well! Match points will determine the winner, and then if there is a tie game points will also be used. If there is still a tie, head-to-head results will be used, and finally if this is still a tie, game points not including board 4 will be compared (then without board 3 as well, etc.) until a winner is determined.
Introduction to the London Team Rapidplay
On Saturday, the 28th of April 2011, Imperial College will be hosting a open Team Rapidplay event open to all, with a large number of London and out-of-London universities invited. Club teams are also welcome to join. After the success of the first London Team Rapidplay (see the report here) we are proud to announce our next event!
A fun day of competitive chess in a great Zone 1 location, the venue is also conveniently located directly above the Imperial College Union bar, serving a variety of drink (at incredibly cheap prices!) to lubricate the parched throats of our competitors as well as snacks and food. Many restaurants and takeaways (info provided on the day for any who would like) are also comfortably within a 5-10 minute walk, and the schedule with an hour break for lunch should leave sufficient time to relax and grab a bite if required.
We have secured the Union Dining Hall (the room opposite where previous events were held) which means we are no longer directly on top of the bar and underneath the Union gym – this will mean a lot less noise and better playing conditions for all! In addition we will be offering free tea, coffee and snacks to all competitors this time!

Grading / Board Order Rules
The ‘grade’ of the 4-board team shall be determined by the average grade of the four highest rated members of the team. The rating of each player for the purposes of the tournament shall be (in order of preference):
- Current ECF Rapidplay grade
- In absence of the above, current ECF Standard grade
- In absence of the above, converted national grade (if applicable)
- In absense of the above, estimated grade as determined by team captain
For ungraded players within a team, the team captain shall, to the best of his or her ability, give the event organiser an estimated grade of the player during the team’s registration.
No team can play a board order where a teammate more than 10 grading points stronger is on any board below them.
