This year, the infamous Hockey Varsity took place on Wednesday 26th February. After weeks of extra trainings, fitness sessions and a huge final carb-load, the girls of ICSMLHC were ready to take on our rivals IC. The first game of the day was the inaugural Ladies 3s match at 11am. Excited to be making history, the 3s stepped out onto the pitch, led by Theo Richer and with many ICSMLHC girls on the side-lines to cheer them on.
Within minutes IC had taken out Emily Miles, one of the team’s key players, forcing the team to step up their play. After a tense game and some great play by the girls, the final score was 5-2 to IC. This score was not representative of the standard of play of the 3s, who more than rose to the challenge of their first Varsity.
The next Ladies match was the 2s, led by Beccy Thompson. After a strong season, the team was well equipped to take on IC in this notoriously tough match. The game started well, with both teams seeming evenly matched. Unfortunately, the British weather had other plans and soon the blue skies disappeared, replaced by black skies and hail. The 2s powered through the storm and put up a valiant fight against the other team. The final score of 5-0 to IC was not what they had hoped for, but the effort and determination each player had put into the game was unquestionable.
Finally came the Ladies 1s, our final match of the day for the club. After what seemed like an infinite number of the flicks by the Men’s 2s (who sadly just missed out on the win), the 1s made their way onto the pitch behind the captain Veronica Nott. After last year’s Varsity win and a 5-5 draw against IC a few months beforehand, they were gunning for the win. The girls managed to keep a close lead in the first half, before bringing it home in the second half with a 6-2 win!
The effort the team put in this season really paid off, finishing on a great score and securing the only win for the Medics this year. A huge well done to everyone who played, we’ll be back next year to fight for the victories once again.
The crowds rocked up on a sunny but chilly Wednesday morning for a full day of high-quality hockey. Although the day started with an IMHC 3s loss, our men took a lot of positivity from the game and settled down with pints in hand to support the rest of the club. IMHC 2s played an entertaining game and had the ball cleared off the opposition goal line twice. The final score was 0-0 and we went to penalty flicks. Despite the 2s having never practised penalty flicks (ever), 5 brave players kept their calm and took it to sudden death. As nerves crept in, IC took the win on the 32nd penalty to claim a victory against an emotional, gutted IMHC 2s.
After watching the Ladies 1s smash IC 6-2, the day was set up for the 1s game. Who would be crowned Varsity Champions 2020? Would IC manage to retain the trophy after their first win in many years in 2019? The first half ended 0-0 with both teams having few opportunities to score a goal. In the second half, a swift counterattack culminated in Arion Alexopoulos burying a penalty into the top corner –1-0 to IMHC. 10 minutes before fulltime, a slight lapse in concentration saw IC score a sweaty goal – 1-1.
Disappointment for IMHC. The final whistle blew and the crowd was treated to another penalty shootout. Some fine saves from their goalkeeper saw IMHC 1s lose sudden death 5-4 – again breaking hearts all round. Despite the agony, the boys were proud of their performances and headed to Reynolds in high spirits after a class day of hockey.
