BIM Study Group Professors, lectures, industry speakers and students
BIM Study Group Professors, lectures, industry speakers and students

As BIM is a revolutionized technology revolution for the construction industry, more and more clients begin to require BIM on jobs. BIM has become a valuable skill for engineering students, which can make you stand out from the crowd. With the desire to bridge the gap between knowledge and practical need, we provide a platform for all the BIM fans in ICL to study and support each other in learning about BIM, at the same time, transferring the knowledge among ourselves.

Who We Are

The BIM study group was formed in May 2013 by two visiting PhD students from Taiwan National University BIM Centre to:

  • Provide opportunities for beginners to obtain basic understanding of BIM by reviewing related report and papers

  • Provide opportunities for students to learn practical skills about BIM through hands-on software learning sessions

  • Provide opportunities for final year students to speak with industry by having seminars with guest speakers

The BIM study group is also collaborating with Imperial College Blue Green Dream Project ( to develop BIM toolbox for Blue-Green designs (green roofs, rain harvesting technology, etc.)

What We Do

From May to August, we held 6 seminars in Skempton Building Room 315. Each seminar was about two hours. The activities of the BIM study group were largely carried out in three parts: invited industry speaker presentation, hands-on software learning and BIM-related report review sessions.

We invited two experienced industry speaker - Mr.Raj Chawla (Project Director of Nunelah Design Consultants Ltd with 28 years working experience) and Mr.Mervyn Richards (Managing Director of MR1 Consulting Ltd, Author of BIM British Standard: BS1192 and PAS1192-2) to give wonderful seminars on the BIM industry in UK. More than 20 people attended including IC professors, department staff, postgraduates and taught graduate students. These talks provoke the spark to bring BIM into ICL.

For software learning and review sessions, postgraduate students took the responsibility to find resources and prepare presentations. All the presentations and meeting notes can be downloaded from our website:

We Are Looking for You

This year we plan to bring the BIM study group to undergraduate level. So we are seeking your help. If you have good BIM skills and are willing to share them with others or you are very energetic and crazy about BIM, please join us and help us to bring BIM to more people! If you want to join the BIM study group or you have some suggestions for this, all are welcomed!
