Congratulations – you’ve made through the feral wilderness of A-levels, and into the seemingly infinite fields of Imperial College Civil Engineering! My name is Camilla and I’m Chair of CivSoc for this academic year. As a fresher entering Imperial College, it’s important for you to know that although you’ll have a fair bit of work to do, and I know you’ll all be eager to succeed in your studies, life at university isn’t just about academic success. To get the most out of your brief 4 years (and trust me, they will fly by) the key is to work hard, play hard, and broaden your mind. CivSoc deals with the social side of civil engineering – providing you with everything from chilled movie nights in our very own Skempton, to the messiest 3 days of the year/your life, the International Tour. To get you excited about civil engineering, we also have our entirely student-run magazine LIVIC, and lunchtime talks given by industry giants on every civ eng topic you can think of.
Imperial College doesn’t just produce academically excellent civil engineers – we churn out all-round awesome people. Trust me, in 2016 when you’re applying for jobs, they won’t just want A*s. They’ll want people who can balance their work and social lives. People who actively contribute to the everyday lives of their colleagues. People who grasped the opportunity to study at one of the best institutions in the world – not just in a sense of attaining a world-class degree, but in socialising and brushing shoulders with the most intelligent people in their industry. These people are the future leaders in engineering that I hope we all aspire to be. Can you smell that? That’s the smell of success, and snakebite.
Peace out. CivSoc love. X
