An insight into contracting

Balfour Beatty is a leading international infrastructure group and were ranked the biggest construction contractor in 2018 the United Kingdom. During this presentation, we aim to give you an insight of what working in contracting is like in the 21st century, covering projects such as the Olympic Games, Heathrow, Hinkley Point C, The Madison Tower and Bridge Building in Rwanda.

About the presentors:

Tom Newton is the Design & Engineering Director for Balfour Beatty Major Projects. He supports a community of 1500 engineers across the UK and has worked on a variety of projects during his career. He has widened the busiest motorway section in Europe, installed a bridge at the Olympic Games, built an airport terminal in between planes landing every 90 seconds and led the engineering for the marine project at Hinkley Point C: the UK’s new generation of nuclear power. In his spare time Tom enjoys triathlon, playing the piano and brewing beer.

Tina Gunnarsson is a Temporary Works Engineer at Balfour Beatty. She graduated from Imperial College in 2015 and joined Balfour Beatty as a graduate design engineer. Since leaving university, she has carried out design for a wide range of projects, including Crossrail, HS2 and TEAM2100, constructed a 54 storey post-tensioned tower in Canary Wharf, and built a suspension bridge for a community of 5000 people in Rwanda. In her free time, Tina enjoys bouldering, trail running and travelling, often at the same time.
